Wave Makers — Episode 3: Meet Susie, The Woman Behind Lazy Surf Bags

Wave Makers — Episode 3: Meet Susie, The Woman Behind Lazy Surf Bags

A life shaped by the ocean — and the inspiration behind one of our favorite surf accessories.

Kseniia—better known as Susie or Susanita—is the creative mind and founder behind Lazy Surf Bags, a brand born from sun-soaked beach days and a deep connection to the ocean. Her path to becoming a surfer, creator, and business owner didn’t start in the water—but once she discovered surfing, everything shifted.

What began as a personal journey of exploration and transformation became the foundation of her slow-made, ocean-inspired brand. In this interview, Susie shares in her own words how surfing became her teacher, Bali became her home, and Lazy Surf Bags became her passion project.

How it all began ✨

Hi everyone, my name is Kseniia—though most people know me as Susie or Susanna, or sometimes even Susanita. I'm the founder and creator of Lazy Surf Bags. For as long as I can remember, I’ve always been riding boards. My teenage years were filled with snowboarding and skateboarding.

That journey started with a vacation to Sri Lanka in 2014, where I visited Arugam Bay. That trip completely changed my mindset—and honestly, it changed my life. After that, I couldn’t stop thinking about surfing and shifting my life toward a surf-centered lifestyle.

Finding her way in the water 🐚

So I moved to Thailand, where I started learning the basics. About a year and a half later, I moved to Bali—where I’m still learning! It’s been over seven years now, and yes, I still consider myself a student and a kook, haha.

But looking back over the past five years, I’ve realized something important: the ocean—and surfing in particular—has been my greatest teacher. Cooler than any math teacher (joking, but kind of true!). Every time I’m in the water, I see myself more clearly and understand my mental state on a deeper level.

The power of surfing 🌊

Even just sharing this now reminds me how incredibly grateful I am for the chance to live this life, to be in the ocean, and to call Bali home. I fall more in love with this place every year—its energy, its attitude toward life, the connection with yourself, and of course, the waves.

From idea to brand: Lazy Surf Bags ✏️

I'm also deeply grateful to myself for choosing this path—because from the ocean, I drew the inspiration to create Lazy Surf Bags. One day, I was so inspired, I sewed a bag entirely by hand on the beach—with nothing but a giant needle and thread. It took a full week. Crazy, right. Just like surfing, the journey has its ups and downs, but I wouldn’t trade it for anything.

That moment sparked something in me. Since then, I’ve probably sewn 700 to 800 pieces with my own hands and sewing machine. Eventually, I started collaborating with artists and creating new designs—and I absolutely love what I do.

Today, I have a team and continue learning new things every day. But no matter how far I go, I always remind myself: just like in surfing, it’s about showing up, staying humble, and riding the next wave.

Susie’s story is proof that the ocean doesn’t just shape waves—it shapes lives. Through Lazy Surf Bags, she’s built more than a brand; she’s created a reflection of the lifestyle she loves, blending creativity, mindfulness, and movement. Her journey continues with each wave, each stitch, and each soul who carries a piece of her story.
