Wave Makers — Episode 2: Lisa's Journey
Lisa’s Journey: From Italy to Nias, A Life Transformed by Surfing
Lisa’s story is one of unexpected transformation and resilience. Born to an Italian father and Japanese mother, Lisa grew up in Florence, Italy, where the ocean was not part of her daily life. Now, she’s living in Nias, Indonesia, where surfing is not just a hobby—it’s become a part of her identity. What began as a late start in surfing turned into a life-changing passion, leading Lisa to start a new chapter by the sea and with Casa Bebas
How It Started & The Journey ✨
I first tried surfing in Puerto Escondido, Mexico, around 11 years ago, alongside with my best friend. Even though I grew up with limited exposure to the ocean, I was immediately captivated by the surfing lifestyle. My first lessons were tough—I struggled to find my balance. But when a coach named Julio offered me a 20-day surf package, I decided to commit. During that time, I learned how to paddle and eventually stood up on a wave for the first time. That moment was pivotal—it felt like flying, and it sparked my lifelong love for the sport.
My journey continued with more surf trips to places like Nicaragua, Costa Rica, and El Salvador. But it wasn’t until I lived in Siargao and surfed regularly in the Philippines that I truly gained confidence and a sense of mastery. Surfing became more than just a sport—it became a way for me to confront my fears, especially my fear of the ocean, and to grow in ways I’ve never expected.
What Surfing Means to Me 🏄
Surfing taught me how to embrace the unpredictable nature of life. I was raised in a structured, disciplined environment and initially sought control in every part of my life. But the ocean has its own way of teaching surrender. Waves are unpredictable, and every day on the water is different—sometimes frustrating, sometimes euphoric. For me, surfing is about letting go, staying present, and finding peace in uncertainty.

Finding My Home in Nias 🏠
After I lost both of my parents, I took time to reflect and travel. I explored Sri Lanka and different parts of Indonesia, but nowhere truly felt like home—until my best friend invited me to Nias. At first, I was hesitant about the size of the waves, but I quickly fell in love with the perfect surf conditions and the warmth of the local surf community. When the pandemic hit, I found myself stuck in Nias—but instead of panicking, I found peace. Three months later, I bought land, built my home, and decided to settle here permanently.
Casa Bebas & Community
Opening Casa Bebas, my small beachfront café, felt like a natural next step. It’s not just about food and drinks—it’s a celebration of the longboarding lifestyle that’s become central to my life. The café has also become a hub for the local surf community. I regularly host events like beach cleanups and community initiatives to give back to the village. Supporting local causes is a priority for me, from organizing veterinary services for animals to hosting the first-ever Longboard Festival Nias in December 2024. That event truly reflected my values: small, intentional, and full of heart.
My journey to a life centered around surfing in Nias is a testament to the power of following your passion and creating meaningful impact. Through surfing, I’ve discovered my true self and built a life rooted in purpose, connection, and love for the ocean. With every wave I ride, I’m reminded that life is unpredictable—and that the key is learning to flow with it. 🌀
