The ultimate Surf Swimwear Guide: Choose your piece based on our wave
Not all waves are the same. And your surf quiver — swimsuits & boards — shouldn't be either.
At Ninefoot Studio we design surf swimwear for women who actually surf — and we've learned something that matters more than aesthetics: how your swimsuit performs in the water comes down to the amount of fabric, how the piece is made, the quality of the materials, and the technique behind every pattern and stitch.

Quick answer: the right surf swimsuit depends on wave conditions — not swimsuit size or wave height alone. More fabric and higher coverage hold up in fast, hollow waves; minimal styles work fine in soft, mellow conditions. Below is our full wave-by-wave guide.

Every piece in our collection is matched to the wave — not just sized. Because a head-high wave at a punchy reef break and a head-high wave at a mellow beach break are two completely different animals.

Soft conditions. Mellow waves, sunny days, easy sessions. Any piece in the collection works here. Our beloved ankle-to-knee-high days — because we love a small wave kind of day. 🤍

Medium conditions. Consistent waves, long sessions. Most of our pieces work here — we leave out asymmetric designs and minimal bikinis that don't generate enough friction to hold in place.
Power Sessions 🌊🌊🌊 3 bars
Built for anything. Fast, hollow, full-on waves. Only our highest-coverage, best-construction pieces make this cut.
When we talk about wave size, we're really talking about how the wave breaks. Speed and shape determine what you need to wear — not just height.
Less fabric means less friction against your skin — and less friction means less hold. In powerful waves, minimal pieces move. They underperform. They wear out faster. More fabric keeps everything in place through hard turns, wipeouts, and long sessions. That's not marketing. It's physics.

The reason we don't design basic triangle tops is simple: we don't feel secure in them. And if we don't feel secure, we won't put our name on it.
That said, this year we launched our most minimal line yet — and it's been a success. Because we believe in the hybrid suit: pieces you can wear to the pool, hang out in all day, and still take into the ocean. That crossover is real, and we're here for it.
But surf has always been the starting point. Every piece we make is designed there first — in the water, in real conditions, on real women. Everything else follows from that. 🌊

What's the best swimsuit for surfing big or fast waves?
Go for maximum coverage and secure construction — full onepieces, long-cut tops, and high-coverage bottoms rated 🌊🌊🌊 in our guide above. More fabric means more friction, which means it stays put through wipeouts and hard turns.
Can I surf in a regular bikini?
You can, but in anything above soft, mellow conditions you'll likely spend more time adjusting it than surfing in it. Minimal, low-coverage pieces aren't built for the impact of a wipeout.
Does wave height or wave conditions matter more for choosing a swimsuit?
How the wave breaks matters more than its height. A head-high wave at a mellow beach break needs far less coverage than the same size wave at a fast, hollow reef break.
Is a one-piece better than a bikini for surfing?
Not automatically — it depends on construction and coverage, not the style itself. A well-built bikini top and bottom (like our 🌊🌊🌊-rated pieces) can hold as well as a onepiece in powerful surf.
